About this coffee

Kinmuga coffees come from a network of smallholders in the southern Waghi Valley, an area known as the “food bowl of PNG” for its fertile volcanic soil and long agricultural history. Nestled at 1,600 meters above sea level and surrounded by an extinct volcano, the valley benefits from nutrient-rich deposits carried by the Wara Tuman River. Smallholder farmers deliver ripe cherries to the Kindeng wet mill for pulping, fermentation, and processing into parchment before being transported to the Kagamuga dry mill in Hagen. Since 2018, Kindeng has utilized an environmentally friendly wastewater digester, ensuring sustainable coffee production. The combination of high-altitude tropical climate, nutrient-rich soil, and careful processing contributes to the distinctive quality of Kinmuga coffees.

Our sourcing partner, Benchmark Coffee Traders, is focused on creating meaningful impact in the coffee-growing communities of Papua New Guinea. For the last six years, they have funded textbooks for five elementary schools, and in 2023, in partnership with Deeper Roots, built a new school serving 88 children. To improve water access, they have installed seven water tanks in the Highlands, where no piping system exists and access to a clean, reliable water source is not a given. Last March, in partnership with QueenPads, they funded and distributed reusable hygienic products to 580 women, along with menstrual health education. Through these initiatives, Benchmark continues to support education, clean water, and health in Papua New Guinea.

Across roast levels, PNG Kinmuga shows a graceful evolution in sweetness and structure. At lighter roasts, the cup opens with ripe pear, green grape, and a hint of lime, supported by soft honeyed sweetness and a delicate chocolate undertone. As the coffee moves into medium roasts, the profile deepens with rounder, more caramelized pear, notes of brown sugar and praline, while bittersweet chocolate takes a more prominent role. In espresso and darker expressions, the sweetness shifts warmer and richer, highlighting brown sugar, toasted nuts, and subtle spice, anchored by a lingering bittersweet chocolate finish.
