About this coffee
Café Sierra Azul is a small cooperative in Chiapas, Mexico within the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve—home to the largest evergreen cloud forest in Mesoamerica and the largest remaining tropical rainforest on the Mexican Pacific coast. Sierra Azul is a relatively new cooperative founded in 2010 by young people in the community who had grown up in coffee and were looking for opportunities to create sustainable livelihoods in Chiapas rather than immigrate to the United States. In fact, one producer that the Bellwether team met, immigrated to Utah and worked as a farmer before returning to his community to produce coffee. The vast majority of the 300 members are young people and women who are able to access better markets and financing as well as technical assistance and social projects through the cooperative. This coffee was grown using organic practices by certified organic producers at origin.
