About this coffee

Riakiberu is a wet mill in Kamacharia, Murang'a County, in Kenya's central highlands, processing coffee using the traditional washed method. Smallholder farmers grow cherry around 1,650 MASL, mostly SL28 with some Batian and Ruiru 11, in red volcanic soil that's made this region synonymous with Kenya's finest coffee. Many intercrop with bananas and maize under Grevillea and macadamia shade, and the wet mill offers ongoing Good Agricultural Practices training to help members raise yields and quality.

Cherry is handpicked at peak ripeness during the October–December main harvest and depulped the same day. The parchment ferments for 12 to 24 hours, then is washed and dried on raised beds for 10 to 22 days with frequent turning. Riakiberu manages wastewater through soak pits to protect nearby streams and encourages tree planting among its members.
