Bette Buna is a vertically integrated coffee company founded in 2020 by husband-and-wife Dawit and Hester. Their story began in Tefari Kela, Sidama, where Dawit’s grandparents cultivated coffee for nearly a century. After taking over the family farm, Dawit and Hester built Bette Buna with a mission to create equal opportunities for coffee communities through sustainable farming and exceptional quality.
Today, Bette Buna operates farms across Guji, Yirgacheffe, Sidama, and Bench Maji, and sources from allied farmers throughout Ethiopia. This lot comes from their Megadu farm in Guji, spanning 220 hectares of semi-forest and wild forest coffee, and supported by 850 employees who receive fair wages, meals, housing, and access to education for their children.
The coffee underwent natural anaerobic fermentation in sealed tanks for 96 hours, using pulp juice from previous lots to introduce a unique microbial environment. After fermentation, the cherries were dried on raised African beds, milled and sorted in Gelan, resulting in a cup that is intensely sweet, fruit-forward, and exceptionally clean.

This coffee delivers an exquisite and lush cup, shaped by its anaerobic natural processing and inherent origin qualities. Layered with vibrant florality and fruit, this coffee offers clarity, complexity, and playfulness in every sip. At light and medium roasts, the character of the Megadu shines brightest, preserving both origin and processing. Notes of bergamot, lavender, and rose mingle with flavors of blackberry, raspberry, and honey sweetness. The cup is clear and playful, with the medium roast adding depth, a rounder body, and richer sweetness while maintaining its lifted aromatics. At a medium-dark roast, the fruit deepens into stewed berries wrapped in molasses-like sugars, giving the cup a fuller mouthfeel. Even at a dark roast, the coffee retains its signature fruit and floral core, now anchored by a rich, dark sweetness that adds warmth and structure without overshadowing its complexity. This coffee shines as a single origin, whether served as a conversation-starting espresso or an exotic cold brew.
