About this coffee

Busasa Coffee Washing Station, established in 2014 in the Gashoho area of northern Burundi, sources coffee from approximately 1,600 smallholder farmers in the surrounding hills. The station operates with a core team of six full-time staff and up to 150 seasonal workers, and is equipped with 151 African drying beds. Farmers delivering to Busasa receive a 20% premium above local market prices, while station staff earn wages nearly 60% higher than the national average. Busasa is part of Matraco, a Burundian-owned company that also operates two additional washing stations in the region. Matraco supports producers through compost distribution and seedling donations, and maintains close quality oversight by transporting coffee using its own fleet of trucks. As Burundi’s coffee sector has liberalized, increased access to washing stations and quality incentives has helped farmers improve both cup quality and livelihoods.

This Burundi lot offers a structured yet expressive cup, defined by layered sweetness and vibrant fruit character. Notes of apricot, raw sugar, and date create a profile that feels both lively and grounded. While the acidity brings energy to the cup, it’s supported by steady sweetness and evolving body that carry beautifully across roast levels.

In lighter roasts, the acidity takes the lead, highlighting fresh apricot, honey, and raw sugar with clarity and lift. As the roast moves into medium, the profile becomes more rounded and balanced — dried apricot and light brown sugar emerge alongside fresh orange, creating a juicy, sweet finish with increased body. At medium-dark, the fruit deepens and the cup takes on a more structured quality, revealing black tea, date, and caramel with a lingering sweetness. In darker roasts, the coffee becomes dense and concentrated, showcasing notes of date, dried apricot, and molasses with a rich, lasting finish. No matter how it’s brewed, this coffee shines as a single origin, offering clarity, sweetness, and a memorable fruit-driven profile in the cup.
